Cathodic Protection for Underground Fuel Tanks.

Calling all homeowners with underground fuel tanks, is your tank protected from CORROSION?

Corrosion in underground fuel tanks comes in the form of rust buildup or pits along the surface of the tank, oftentimes resulting in fuel leaks that could massive amounts of damage to your property. The corrosion process is caused by an electromechanical reaction where electricity flows from the surface of the tank to the soil surrounding it, causing the tank's exterior to corrode. In this case, the underground tank acts as an anode in the corrosion circuit and is susceptible to corrosion over time as traces of electricity are released.

So what can you do to fix this problem?

One solution that can be used to prevent corrosion from occurring is Cathodic Protection. Cathodic Protection is a method for controlling the corrosion of underground tanks by using the natural energy of other metals to redirect corrosion away from the tank. These metals, or anodes, are placed underground and allow electricity to flow through the soil, corroding the anodes instead of the tank.

Here at ckSmithSuperior, we offer all new customers a FREE inspection of their tank's Cathodic Protection equipment before signing up with us. After that, we recommend having your Cathodic Protection system recertified every 3 years to ensure that the anodes are still functioning properly and protecting your tank. On top of that, we have the pros and knowledge to replace anodes that are used up, ensuring your tank is always protected!
